The U.S. SBD Dauntless was the standard shipborne dive bomber of the U.S. Navy from 1940 until late 1943. It was a critical part of the U.S. forces in several key engagements, including the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. The Dauntless damaged all four Japanese aircraft carriers at the battle of Midway, and also sank one heavy cruiser and severely damaged a second cruiser. In the later parts of World War II, the Dauntless was also used by the U.S. Marine Corps from island based airstrips.

This highly detailed 1:72 scale version of the U.S. SBD-5 Dauntless depicts the aircraft flown by Major Christian Lee from VMS-3 of the USS Virgin Islands during 1944.
