The P-40 was a single seat fighter and ground attack aircraft that was used in great numbers during World War II, with almost 14 thousand being produced by the end of the war, and P-40s were used by the air forces of 28 nations during the war. U.S. Army Air Corps adopted the name 'Warhawk' for its P-40s, while the British Commonwealth air forces used the name 'Tomahawk' for the P-40B and P-40C versions.
The American Volunteer Group was a group of U.S. military pilots recruited under a secret presidential sanction to form a fighter group that defended the Burma supply line to China against Japanese forces prior to the U.S. entry into World War II. Nicknamed the 'Flying Tigers', this group of pilots operated as a unit of the Republic of China Air Force and achieved remarkable success against the Japanese forces, and were credited with destroying almost 300 enemy aircraft while only losing a dozen of their own aircraft in combat. The destinctive shark-face nose art on their aircraft was among the the most recognizable emblem of any combat unit of World War II.
This WWII U.S. P-40B Tomahawk is part of 21st Century Toys' Ultimate Soldier 32X vehicle series. It depicts the aircraft as flown by pilot David Lee 'Tex' Hill, who was the Flight Leader of the 2nd Pursuit Squadron (Panda Bears) of the 'Flying Tigers' American Volunteer Group during World War II. Hill became a 'triple ace' during the war, and his heroics were portrayed by John Wayne in the movie 'Flying Tigers'.
