In review of the highly effective German Luftwaffe campaigns of Western Europe, the US Army recognized the need for a highly mobile vehicle that could adequately defend itself against aircraft fire. In order to produce significant quantities quickly, the Army decided to modify existing half-track vehicles by adding four Browning .50 caliber machine guns and improve armor protection and gun turrets. The half-track proved big, stable and reliable as an effective anti-air defensive vehicle. What could be better than a “Ma Deuce”? Four of them (a 'Quad 50') mounted on a half-track!
