The 716th Infantry Division was a large unit with very little mobility. It was often referred to as a “static” division because of its lack of armor. Rommel intended to use the 716th as his first line of defense against an Allied invasion of Normandy. These were the German troops encountered at Sword and Juno beaches by British and Canadian assault forces on D-Day.
