Many people consider the P-51 Mustang the best fighter of WWII. Its combination of speed, range, maneuverability, and firepower gave it great versatility. Its use in all major theaters of the war included long range, high altitude escort of Bombers, close air support for ground troops, and photo reconnaissance.
Originally developed by North American Aviation for the British, the Mustang was later ordered in large quantities by the USAAF.
After World War II, the P-51 remained in service with over 30 air forces around the world. Shortly after the start of the Korean War, the United States started providing P-51D Mustangs (known by then as F-51D Mustangs) to the Republic of Korea Air Force. These planes were flown by both South Korean pilots and also U.S. advisers.
This F-51 is displayed as it was seen during the Korean War, and shows the 'Miss Manooky' aircraft.
This 1:72 scale die-cast F-51D Mustang is part of the Witty Wings' Birds of Prey series. It is approximately 5 inches long with a wingspan of 6 inches.
