German V-1 Flying Bomb

German V-1 Flying Bomb The German V-1 (Vergeltungswaffe 1) flying bomb was developed during World War II and was originally designated the Fieseler Fi 103. It was the first guided missile used during the war, and was used by the Germans to bombard targets in England and Belgium.

The V-1 utilized a pulsejet engine, and the engine's buzzing noise led to nicknames such as 'buzz bomb' and 'doodlebug'. The V-1's guidance system allowed it to fly to the target using a simple autopilot that regulated height, speed, and heading. A vane anemometer on the nose determined when the target area had been reached, and the V-1 would then dive towards its target and detonate upon impact.

Approximately 30 thousand V-1s were made during the war, and about ten thousand of them were fired at England.

The V-1 flying bomb was studied extensively after the war, and it led to the development of other guided missiles, including cruise missiles.

This detailed 1:18 scale version of the German V-1 Flying Bomb is part of Pegasus Hobbies' Military Museum Collection and is approximately 13 inches long with a wingspan of approximately 10 inches!
