The Los Angeles class nuclear powered submarine is an attack submarine equipped for strike missions, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and search and rescue missions.
The United States has 51 Los Angeles class submarines, in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. Nine of the Los Angeles class submarines were deployed in the Gulf War in 1991, during which cruise missiles were launched from two of those submarines. Twelve Los Angeles class submarines were delpoyed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003, and all 12 launched cruise missiles.
The USS Los Angeles (SSN-688) was commissioned in 1976 as the lead ship in her class.
