The U.S. B-52 Stratofortress is a subsonic long-range strategic bomber with eight engines. The B-52 has been in continuous active service for over 50 years, entering active service with the U.S.Air Force in 1955. Nicknamed the BUFF for Big Ugly Fat Fellow, the B-52 served as a nuclear strategic bomber during the Cold War and as a conventional bomber in conflicts ranging from the Vietnam War to the Gulf War. The Air Force currently intends to keep the B-52 in service until at least 2040, which would be 85 years after it entered service and 78 years after production ended.
