The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was a German twin-engine, three seat heavy fighter. Initially used as a long range strategic fighter in the early phases of World War II, it was used mostly for night fighter operations and as a fighter-bomber during the later phases of the war.
The BF 110 excelled as a night fighter due to its long range, heavy firepower (including rockets), and dedicated radar operator. These 'Zestorer' (Destroyer) aircraft were especially effective as bomber-destroyers, using their heavy firepower to destroy Allied bombers in just seconds.
The Bf 110 'G' version was the late version of this long range fighter. The 'G' version replaced the previous 20mm cannon with two MG 151/20 20mm cannons, and the 'R3' field modification replaced the normal four 7.9mm machine guns with two Rheinmetall Mk.108 30mm canons, giving this aircraft a tremendous amount of firepower.
This highly detailed 1:72 scale version of the German Messerschmitt Bf 110G-2/R3 depicts an aircraft from ZG 76, II Grupe as it was seen in 1944. This group typically targeted the large formations of Allied bombers that war attacking Germany's war industries, and since those bombers often lacked fighter cover they were easy prey for the heavily armed Bf 110G-2/R3 fighters. On March 16, 1944 the Bf-110G-2s from ZG 76 downed 18 B-17s before Allied P-51 fighters arrived to protect the Allied bombers.
This German Messerschmitt Bf 110G-2/R3 is part of Hobby Master's Air Power Series. The 1:72 scale die cast metal aircraft is approximately 7 inches long with a 9 inch wingspan, and includes detailed features such as a moving propeller and wheels. The aircraft also comes with a display stand.
