U.S. A-4F Skyhawk - 'Black Sheep', VMA-214
The A-4 Skyhawk is an attack aircraft that was the U.S. Navy's primary light bomber during the early years of the Vietnam War. The A-4 Skyhawk had a delta wing and a single turbojet engine, and was armed with two 20mm Colt Mk 12 cannon plus a variety of missiles, bombs, and rockets. The small delta wings meant that folding wings weren't necessary for carrier use. The A-4 Skyhawk also allowed 'buddy' air-to-air refueling, which means that a designated A-4 Skyhawk could mount a center mounted 'buddy store' external fuel tank with an extensible drogue refueling bucket.
In addition to the U.S Navy and Marine Skyhawks that saw service in the Vietnam war, the A-4 Skyhawk was also exported to many other countries, and saw use by Israel in the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War, by Argentina in the Falklands War, and by Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm.
A-4 Skyhawks were also used in training roles, and they were used to simulate aircraft such as the MiG-17 in adversary training at TOPGUN. A-4 Skyhawks were also used by the Blue Angels from 1974 through 1986.
This highly detailed 1:72 scale version of the U.S A-4M Skyhawk depicts the aircraft from VMA-214 (Black Sheep) as it was seen at Iwakuni AB in 1977.
This U.S. A-4F Skyhawk is part of Hobby Master's Air Power Series. The 1:72 scale die cast metal vehicle is approximately 7 inches long with a 5 inch wingspan, and includes features such as detailed graphics, engraved panel lines, detailed cockpit with opening canopy, aerial refueling probe, tail hook, and optional position landing gear with real rubber tires. The aircraft includes a complete ordnance package and also comes with a display stand!
