The U.S.S. Indianapolis (CA-35) was a Portland class cruiser. Launched in 1931, she had a top speed of approximately 33 knots, was armed with nine 8 inch guns in triple turrets, eight 5 inch AA guns, and eight .50 cal machine guns. She also carried two OS2U Kingfisher floatplanes.
The Indianapolis saw service throughout the Pacific theater during World War II. In July of 1945, she delivered parts and the enriched uranium for the Little Boy atomic bomb (which would be dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th) to Tinian island. The Indianapolis then proceeded to Guam. Shortly after leaving Guam, the Indianapolis was struck by two torpedoes fired from a Japanese submarine which caused massive damage and the Indianapolis sunk very quickly. The survivors weren't rescued until four days later, and only 316 of the 1196 sailors on board survived, which is the single largest loss of life in the history of the U.S. Navy. The Indianapolis was the last major U.S. Navy ship sunk by enemy action in World War II.
