U.S. Pearl Harbor P-40 Pilot - Lt. George Taylor

U.S. Pearl Harbor P-40 Pilot - Lt. George Taylor On the morning of December 7th, 1941, war planes of the Japanese Imperial Navy swept across the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Launched from six aircraft carriers north of the island, their objective was the destruction of the American fleet at anchor in Pearl Harbor. Surprise was total, as torpedo bombers struck against the warships while dive bombers and fighters attacked the airfields. By the time the attack was over, 19 U.S. Navy vessels, including 8 battleships, were sunk or seriously damaged. In addition, 188 American aircraft were destroyed.

As the American defenders recovered from the shock of the attack, they manager to get six fighters into the air. Haleiwa auxiliary airfield remained unscathed and two young officers of the 47th Fighter Squadron rushed back to their armed and waiting P-40 Kittyhawks. Lieutenants George S. Welch and Kenneth A. Taylor immediately took off to join the battle. As the first wave of attackers left, they landed to refuel and rearm just in time for the arrival of the second wave. By the time the day was done, Welch had shot down four enemy aircraft and Taylor claimed three. Each received the Distinguished Flying Cross for their accomplishments that day.
