The German military involvement in North Africa was a gesture of support for Mussolini by Hitler and eventually involved the legendary Erwin Rommel. Arriving in Tripoli in 1941 Rommel’s forces were made up of a variety of fully motorized and support elements. Among these were the “Gebirgsjager¨ or Mountain Troops. Elements from these units known as the Afrika Corps battled the British 8th Army throughout the campaign.
