The British Army units originally formed to carry out raids against the coast of occupied Europe eventually became known as "Commandos." These men were volunteers from a cross-section of regular army corps in search of action and adventure. Commando elements known as "Layforce" were called to action in the Middle East against the Italians and the German forces led by Rommel.
