British Air Vice-Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham formed the beginnings of the Desert Air Force (DAF) in late 1941. Its mission was to support infantry and armored units in North Africa and provide air cover over the entire theater of operation. Most of the DAF squadrons flew the famous British Hurricane fighter. After the end of the War in Africa, the DAF supported the Allied invasion of Sicily from bases in Malta.
